This episode of Living Myth begins with the old idea that a genuine education offers each student “roots and wings.” The roots can be seen as the rudiments of learning intended to provide the tools needed to become a part of everyday life. The wings however, must be imagined as the expansion of each student's inner spirit, the awakening of their core imagination, and the revelation of their unique way of being present in the world.

Michael Meade suggests that the current school crisis, albeit agonizing for parents, teachers and administrators, also presents an opportunity to reimagine the very spirit of education. If education continues to be seen at the root level of schooling, we may miss the deeper learning that is trying to happen at all levels of life right now.

In a world full of great uncertainty and radical change, the role of education must change to suit the times. Meade reframes learning as part of a “second adventure of life” that includes a greater sense of imagination, a deeper sense of resiliency and a genuine sense that each person has some genius quality to bring to life.

In times of collective crisis we either become bigger people and shape greater vessels for the flow of life, or else we shrink from life’s challenges, and make the world smaller for ourselves and our children.

This episode begins with the ancient ideas of the Kali Yuga, the “dark time” that lasts for a long time. Michael Meade uses the old tale of worldwide decline to consider our collective plight in the midst of the current pandemic along with all the other crises plaguing the world.

The surprise comes when Meade reveals radical ideas from several ancient texts about how to find the spirit of light and vision for life in the midst of the dark times on earth. It turns out that accepting the story trying to unfold from within and waking to the presence of the inner “atman” or genius self are keys to navigating the dark times. But also, getting into the “right trouble” and finding what our souls want to be devoted to are also ways to contribute to help the light to return from the darkest times.

A primary meaning of apocalypse is “lifting the veil,” both uncovering what was covered up and discovering things previously unknown. An example of the kind of surprising discovery that can happen in troubled times appeared recently. Astronomers identified a cosmic curtain of thousands of galaxies just beyond our Milky Way. Although enormous and relatively close, this expansive system of galaxies had been obscured by the dust of an area called the Zone of Avoidance.

This cosmic event can also be symbolic of the human psyche, where we can have inner zones of denial and avoidance that obscure insights and illuminating meanings that can expand, enrich and enliven our lives. In the midst of all of the current crises on Earth, it's important to know that there can also be the emergence of hidden truths appearing like stars that were formerly obscured.

One way to imagine this potential inner lifting of the veil is through the psychological dynamic of fate and destiny. Fate involves all that limits us in life, while destiny calls us to find and follow our star. In avoiding fateful issues in our lives, we build the inners zones of avoidance. When we face our fate, we can find the inner “twist of fate” that reveals and aligns us with our destiny in life.

At this time we are being called to find the courage, both collectively and individually, to face aspects of fate that constrict our lives and darken our world. The cosmos wants us to know that just beyond the zones of denial and avoidance there are unseen stars, bright ideas and brilliant flashes of imagination that can light a multitude of pathways through this troubled world.

This special edition of Living Myth uses a longer format to connect ancient ideas of rites of passage with the need for both transformation and healing on many levels of life.

An old idea from the process of initiation states that before the journey begins, you own the journey. But, once the journey has begun, the journey owns you. Both collectively and individually we are in the midst of a journey that we don't own.

The way forward involves great uncertainties; yet each day makes it more clear that there can be no turning back. We are being called to understand a radical mode of transformation in which letting go of old forms and old attitudes becomes necessary both for psychological growth and for reimagining cultural life.

Life, death and renewal is the mystery that underlies all of creation and shapes the ideas and images of rites of passage. In such rites the initiates become frightened and frustrated, disoriented and confused. However, this liminal condition of being betwixt and between was considered to be a holy confusion that precedes awakening and genuine transformation.

The current state of widespread uncertainty, doubt and agitation can be seen a modern version of holy confusion. Chaotic conditions can be seen as a prerequisite for finding the greater inspirations and deeper levels of healing needed to renew life and shape a better world for everyone.

This episode addresses the puzzling question of why some people refuse to wear anti-virus masks in the midst of a deadly pandemic. Michael Meade describes the attitude of dismissing dangerous and potentially fatal issues as being under a spell that makes people “wrong-headed” and potentially delusional and strangely self-destructive.

In modern, mass societies, falling under spells can become more common because people tend to harden as individuals too early, before experiencing the deeper feelings that open both the heart and the mind. People can become arrogant and defensive about who they are and what they deserve before they have actually become anything like what their soul intends them to be.

In mythological terms, the spell falls exactly where changes must occur for conscious growth to actually happen. By facing up to the issues at hand, no matter how complicated, things get “spelled out” and everyone can become more conscious and more humanly interconnected.

Under pressure from the coronavirus pandemic and the crisis of social injustice the deep wounds of our culture as well as our personal traumas are being brought to the surface of life. Both levels of trauma are calling for us to bring more consciousness and more healing to them.

In this episode Michael Meade turns to old alchemical ideas where salt becomes a symbol of how to understand the nature of persistent collective and personal wounds. Working with what truly matters to us involves us in what's the matter with us. And working with those two things, is what makes us “worth our salt.”

Instead of putting salt in old wounds, we can extract from them the “salt of wisdom,” which becomes a key medicine for the time we live in and a source of genuine solutions that can open ways forward that include everyone.

Jun 24, 2020

This episode begins with ancient ideas of the essence of leadership and community from the Ndembu people of Zaire. In this view, a person elevated to a position of power must embody both nobility and humility; they must be welcoming to everyone and respect the rights of others or the underlying bonds of humanity can be broken.

Michael Meade makes the connections to our current crises of racism, injustice and the misuse of power and authority. Then, he depicts the potential for a collective rite of passage based upon communitas - the often spontaneous, shared experience of unity in depth that transcends established structures and helps heal the wounds of hatred, division and abuse of power.

We may be in a righteous political battle and in a critical election year; we are also at the edge of genuine transformation and being called to awaken to the greater spirit of humanity and to the deeper bonds of an inclusive community of the heart.

This episode of Living Myth begins with the idea that the cascade of worldwide crises and life-changing events require not just change, but a genuine cultural transformation. Michael Meade describes how we are in the midst of a collective rite of passage that calls upon each of us to contribute to an awakening of true humanity. He shows how a metamorphosis of both individual lives and collective attitudes can be understood through the age-old patterns of initiation.

“Essential changes must come from another level of being. When it comes to issues of the human heart and soul, the archetypal pattern of initiation underlies the dynamic energy of transformation.”

At this point in the story of the world the tragic killing of George Floyd becomes a cause for worldwide protests, but also the occasion for a funeral for everyone who cares about the state of humanity. It is a sorrowful, painful way of learning how we truly are all in this together.

After a profound poem from Emily Dickinson, Michael Meade intones an ancient funeral poem from Zaire written to honor the natural nobility of the person passing to the other world. Meade concludes by saying, “There's been a lot of suffering and a lot of unnecessary death, but maybe, if we can be in a funeral together, maybe, if we learn from death together, we can learn to truly live together. Maybe then “a change is going to come.”

This episode addresses the tragic killing of George Floyd and the ground swell of protests against the epidemic of racism and blatant injustice. The callous execution of yet another unarmed black man at the hands of police has torn the skin off the age-old wound of racism and revealed the process of dehumanization that continues to be the deep fault line in American culture.

The word crisis comes directly from ancient Greek healers, who used the term to define a turning point in the course of a disease. In America, the persistent disease involves systemic racism and deadly injustice. We are now at a tipping point when it comes to the very essence of democracy, but we are also in a struggle for the soul of humanity.

There are times when myth and fact come together. And we are now living in an era when the crises and dilemmas we face reach mythic proportions. We have reached a critical point in terms of dealing with the coronavirus and facing the societal fault lines further revealed by the pandemic. The current arguments about wearing masks or not only distract from a deeper unmasking of how we value human life and the need for greater truth-telling if we are to develop trust and find deeper ways of healing.

The lack of truth and empathy in political life will further dehumanize life and divide us if we don't find the antidote in ourselves. Michael Meade offers an old story that reveals the essential connection between truth and healing that can lead us to deeper states of compassion, empathy, and mutual understanding.

This episode of Living Myth begins with an ancient creation story in which the creator experiences doubt and makes a serious mistake at the very beginning of creation. Ever since then people have been having doubts and making mistakes. The current period of pandemic has been marked by tragic mistakes of judgement as well as mistaken policies that affect all of our lives. In the old creation story, a surprising turn of events brings wisdom into the world as an antidote to unnecessary mistakes and destructive lies. There may be no better time than now for a return of wisdom as a medicine for all that ails the world.

May 13, 2020

This episode of Living Myth considers the importance of imagination when facing complicated challenges. As the world seems to go upside down, we can find ourselves in a kind of underworld where raw emotions, oppositional energies, and delusional thinking become magnified.

In these increasingly anxious times, the sense of powerlessness and fear of the unknown can cause a desperate need to find simple answers for truly complicated issues. In that sense, the COVID-19 pandemic doesn't just present a challenging medical situation; it also creates a challenge to human imagination.

The more restrictive the basic attitudes of individuals or groups tend to be, the more negative and destructive the effects of a changing world will seem to them. Where a person, group or a whole society feels most restricted, that is where the greatest lack of imagination will be found. Imagination is the deepest power of the human soul. In the end, innovation, as well as liberation, derives from the sense that freedom is found in the active, imaginative mind.

May 6, 2020

This episode begins with the idea that there are two levels of myth. The first level involves narratives used to shape and manipulate people’s beliefs. Such a “lesser myth” appeared when Donald Trump fashioned a story that deepened the divisions between people, while convincing some that he was the “only one” who could fix their lives. As one journalist stated, "Trump can get his facts wrong as long as he gets his myth right. He can commit a million scandals, but his followers don't see them as long as they remain embedded within that myth."

The second level of myth opens pathways to a deeper understanding of life and a greater appreciation for the core values of humanity. Whereas the false narratives depend upon the exclusion of “others,” the greater myths lead to a sense of profound unity. The second level of myth verifies and supports the felt sense that “we are all in this together.”

At this critical and perilous moment in the coronavirus pandemic, following the false myth of self-interest can literally lead to an increasing sacrifice of human lives. In this time of life and death issues, the deeper levels of mythic imagination can help sustain and transform both the individual soul and the heart of our culture.

Apr 30, 2020

This episode of Living Myth opens with the idea that the coronavirus pandemic causes a greater activation of both the archetype of the healer and that of the leader. In order to consider how failures of leadership can undermine even the most heroic attempts at healing, Michael Meade turns to an ancient myth from India. When Indra, the prototype for all subsequent leaders, becomes wildly inflated and endlessly demanding, the growing sense of chaos threatens the entire realm of life. In the myth an intervention on the part of the gods reduces the hubris of the ruler and brings balance back to the realm. At this critical time on earth, an awakening of genuine and inspired leadership may have to come from the hearts and minds of a multitude and diversity of people in order for even greater tragedies to be avoided.

Apr 22, 2020

On this Earth Day episode of Living Myth, Michael Meade tells a myth of the origin of the earth. The tale begins when a divine woman falls from the sky and is saved by birds and other animals. After giving birth to twins who represent hard-hearted and kind-hearted ways of being, the lady who fell from heaven becomes the living spirit of the earth. When the conflict between the hard and the gentle twins intensifies, the whole world goes out of balance. As things reach a global tipping point, the spirit of the earth directly offers encouragement and guidance to the kind-hearted twin.

After outlining how conditions on earth, including the climate crisis and the current pandemic, parallel the conflicts at the beginning of time, Meade concludes: “Those who learn to listen to the earth develop qualities of devotion and fierce compassion. They become capable of creating and sustaining places of refuge and sanctuary and they become the friends of the Earth and the agents of ongoing creation.”

This episode begins with a series of contrasting words that can characterize some of the responses to the current pandemic. Disaster is a star word that means to “miss your star” and find catastrophe instead, and destiny, which means to “follow your star” to your soul’s destination. Meade considers leadership through the contrast between being a tyrant and having genuine nobility and that leads to the old idea that a true king sacrifices for the benefit of the people. He then offers an antidote to all the confusion, suffering and loss by addressing the star spark in each of our souls that can guide us through the dark times we are in.

Michael Meade uses an ancient story from India to reflect on leadership and language during this painful period of pandemic. In the old tale, a wandering saint or sadhu teaches a snake that has been spreading poison amongst the local villagers to become peaceful. A second story, from the Sufi tradition, demonstrates the importance of language in a crisis and dramatizes the healing power of words.

Apr 2, 2020

This episode looks at the advent of the coronavirus pandemic through three distinct viewpoints: the literal level of facts and figures, the psychological level that adds feelings and insights to the numbers and data, and the mythological perspective that involves narrative intelligence, deep imagination, and wisdom. Using that framework Michael Meade addresses the growing number of Covid-19 deaths as well as the “little deaths” we all experience as we make sacrifices for our own safety as well as for the health and welfare of everyone else.

Michael ends with quotes from his book Awakening the Soul: “When a situation begins to feel like a matter of life and death, the underlying soul is actually close at hand and trying to get our attention. The core ideals of humanity are intended to serve as a light to follow, especially when the dark times come around and we become more exposed to the extremes of life and even to the touch of death.”

Michael Meade uses an old story from India to illustrate the importance of understanding the idea of exponential growth. The ancient tale serves as a warning for what can happen when the ruler of a country fails to grasp the nature of a complex situation that involves radical change. In contemporary India, the current prime minister has made the bold move of ordering 1.3 billion people to stay at home in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. At the same time, leaders at the top of the U. S. government seem to lack the wisdom and the care needed to truly protect people from the virus. Failing to heed sage advice or simply follow the data, they seem willing to risk trying to revive the economy rather than helping people survive the unprecedented pandemic.

This episode of Living Myth begins with the idea that the world as we knew it has disappeared as the worldwide climate crisis and the global virus pandemic transform both the world around us and the world within us. Michael Meade uses an ancient myth from India to show how the soul responds to troubled times when we can feel overwhelmed by waves of fear and sorrow and all seems to turn to despair. Being both deep and ancient, the human soul has a second level of hope that involves an inner buoyancy that is connected to both imagination and radical resiliency.

This episode of Living Myth begins with issues raised by the spread of the coronavirus and leads to a consideration of the ancient, initiatory practice of katabasis or conscious descent to the inner world. At each turning point in life, we must face our deepest fears in order to grow. We are now at a collective turning point, where we must stop and listen to the body of humanity despite fears of the stock market crashing and in spite of the common belief that everything must keep expanding, so that we avoid a major descent. The willingness to stop and consciously descend can lead to a greater understanding of one's life and a deeper connection to both meaning and purpose.

This episode of Living Myth begins with the sudden changes in the political landscape and moves to greater ideas from mythology and cosmology about change and transformation. Michael Meade tells an ancient story from China that illuminates wise ways of responding to both persistent crisis and sudden changes. When it comes to becoming wise about the world and the power to transform life, there is no right way or single map. “Whether it’s the current political map, or the ever-growing map of the climate crisis or the map of worldwide issues of health and healing, we are all in uncharted territory.”

This episode begins with the idea that at the end of an era everyone can feel older than they are and weighted down by the world. Michael Meade seeks for some deep medicine for our current troubles in ancient stories that tell about listening to the inner bird of spirit and practicing the idea of "dancing to be young again". An old story from Africa shows the radical difference between the wise old woman who helps people connect to the song of their soul and the negative elder who promises people they can have whatever they think they deserve without having to transform their lives.

This episode considers the importance of planting trees in a ritual manner that can help reduce climate anxiety, while also building a greater sense of human community. Michael Meade describes how creative rituals can deepen people’s commitment to the difficult work of healing both culture and nature. He points out the lack of wisdom in thinking that there can be a single solution for the long standing, complex issues that drive the climate crisis. Ritual can provide ways to connect the mind and the heart and reconnect us to the sacredness of life and the ongoing story of creation.
